GTA VI Online Connection Problems to Expect, Based on GTA V Online
GTA VI online connection problems will most likely look like the ones GTA V Online players already know: a strict NAT type, failed matchmaking, sessions that drop, and the “Rockstar Games Services are unavailable” error. The fixes Rockstar documents for GTA Online today are where to start: check Rockstar’s service status, open up your NAT type with UPnP or port forwarding on your router, and use a wired connection where you can.
You’re not the only one stuck on a strict NAT type with fast internet: the cause is usually the router, not the speed. This guide covers the router fixes first, then the case where your console has to get online through a Windows laptop, with Connectify Hotspot, a Windows app that shares your PC’s internet connection with your other devices over Wi-Fi. Download Connectify Hotspot free if your console will be online through a laptop on launch day.
At the time of writing, Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto VI for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s GTA VI page doesn’t list online requirements or network ports yet, so the problems and fixes below come from GTA Online, the online side of GTA V.
Strict NAT Type in GTA Online Means Fewer Players Can Reach You
NAT (Network Address Translation) is how your router lets every device in your home share one public internet address. Your NAT type describes how easily other players’ consoles can open a connection to yours through that router. Rockstar’s GTA Online support pages define three types:
- Open: can play with any other NAT type.
- Moderate: can play with open or moderate NAT types.
- Strict: can only play with open NAT types.
GTA Online connects players’ consoles to each other, so a strict NAT type cuts down the players you can be matched with. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar lists these errors among the connection problems: “Saving failed”, a session that timed out or ended “due to an unknown network error”, “Failed to find a compatible GTA Online session” and “Rockstar Games Services are unavailable”.
Fast internet doesn’t change your NAT type. A speed test measures how much data your connection carries; NAT type depends on whether your router lets other players’ connections in. A fast connection behind a router that blocks those incoming connections still shows strict.
Fix Strict NAT and Failed Matchmaking on Your Home Router First
If your console connects to your own router at home, the fix is on the router. Rockstar’s troubleshooting for GTA Online on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S comes down to these steps:
- Check Rockstar’s servers. Open the Rockstar Games Service Status page. If GTA Online shows an outage or maintenance, wait it out.
- Test your NAT type. On PS5, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection; PS5 shows Type 1, 2 or 3, where Type 3 is strict. On Xbox Series X|S, open Settings > General > Network settings, and select Test NAT type if it shows Unknown.
- Turn on UPnP in your router. UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) lets the console ask the router to open the connections a game needs, by itself. The setting is in your router’s admin page; the router maker’s manual shows where.
- Forward GTA Online’s ports if UPnP isn’t available. Port forwarding tells the router to send incoming game traffic straight to your console. Rockstar lists these ports for GTA Online: UDP 6672, 61455, 61456, 61457 and 61458. Rockstar’s pages also list the PlayStation Network and Xbox network ports.
- Restart the router and clear the console cache. Rockstar suggests leaving the router unplugged for about 10 minutes. On Xbox, turn the console off and unplug it for two minutes; on PS5, Rockstar’s page walks through Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Use Ethernet if you can. Rockstar suggests trying a wired connection if you play over Wi-Fi, and gives targets of 7.5 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload (0.5 Mbps at minimum).
If your internet provider’s modem is also a router and you’ve added your own router behind it, both devices translate addresses, and UPnP on only one of them may not be enough. The guides on how to change your NAT type and how to fix a strict NAT type cover router settings in more detail.
Check PlayStation Plus or Game Pass Before Blaming the Network
Online multiplayer on consoles needs a membership. Sony lists online multiplayer as included with all PlayStation Plus memberships, and Microsoft lists online console multiplayer in Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate. Rockstar hasn’t published GTA VI’s online requirements at the time of writing, so check that your membership is active before you change router settings.
Get a PS5 or Xbox Online Through a Laptop with Connectify Hotspot
Sometimes the console can’t reach the internet directly at all. Three common cases:
- A hotel, dorm or campus network with a login page. These pages are called captive portals: the network lets you join, then blocks internet access until you fill in a web form. A console’s built-in browser can fail on some of these pages. Sign in once on the laptop’s browser and share that connection.
- Phone data over USB. Plug your phone into the laptop with a USB cable, turn on USB tethering on the phone, and share it. Tethering uses your phone plan’s data, and a game download can use up a data allowance fast, so check your plan’s hotspot and tethering terms first.
- A console with Ethernet only, or a laptop that gets Wi-Fi where the console doesn’t. Wired router mode (PRO) shares the laptop’s connection over an Ethernet cable to the console.
Connectify Hotspot is for getting your own devices online after you sign in once. Some hotels and campuses charge per device or limit how many devices you connect; if yours does, check its terms before you share. Where the charge is per room or per stay, sharing with your own console is fine.
Share Your Laptop’s Connection with a Console in 6 Steps
- Download and install Connectify Hotspot on your 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 PC.
- Open it and choose Wi-Fi hotspot. For a cable to the console, choose Wired router mode instead (PRO).
- Under Internet to share, pick the connection you want to share: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, a VPN or a phone plugged in with USB.
- Set a password. Lite runs in 60-minute sessions; PRO removes the limit.
- Click Start hotspot.
- On the console, open the network settings, pick your hotspot’s network name and enter the password.
On laptops with Modern Standby, Windows stops the hotspot about 10 minutes after the screen turns off, so keep the laptop plugged in with the screen on while you play. For console-specific steps, see how to connect an Xbox to hotel WiFi and a PS5 or PS4 to hotel WiFi.
Connectify Hotspot 27 runs on 64-bit Windows 10 (version 1703 or later) and Windows 11. On a Windows 7 or 8 PC, use Connectify Hotspot 2021 instead: see our Windows 7 and Windows 8 guides.
Fix Strict NAT Behind Connectify Hotspot with Free Gaming Mode
A console on a laptop hotspot sits behind one more translation step: the laptop’s. Connectify Hotspot Lite handles that step for free. Open the Clients screen, select your console and set its gaming mode. UPnP is on by default, so GTA Online can ask the laptop to open the connections it needs.
If the console still reports strict NAT, the next step is bridged mode (MAX), which puts the console on the same network as the laptop instead of behind it. Bridged mode works only when the laptop’s internet comes from Wi-Fi or Ethernet. On a hotel network with a login page, bridging makes the console a separate guest device, so it would likely meet the login page again.
Gaming mode fixes the part of the path that runs through your laptop. A hotel, campus or mobile network can still restrict incoming connections on its side, and no setting on the laptop changes that, so no hotspot can promise an open NAT type. More on this in how to enable UPnP on a hotspot for online games.

Which version of Connectify Hotspot you need
Hotspot Lite, the free edition of Connectify Hotspot, covers the setup in this guide. It runs in timed sessions: when one ends, start it again with one click.
Recommended: MAX adds Wi-Fi repeater mode and Bridged mode, for extending your Wi-Fi or putting consoles and casting devices on your home network.

A Laptop Hotspot Won’t Make the GTA VI Download Faster
Search suggestions for GTA VI are mostly about the download: how big it is, when preloading starts and how long it takes. Rockstar’s GTA VI page doesn’t give a download size at the time of writing, so treat any number you see elsewhere as unofficial.
A laptop hotspot shares the laptop’s connection. The console can’t download faster than the laptop’s own internet, and the extra Wi-Fi hop adds nothing to speed. What does help:
- Plug the console into your router with an Ethernet cable for the download.
- Preload if PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store offers it for your pre-order, so the download is finished before launch day.
- Do the big download at home, not on hotel or phone data.
- If you must download through Connectify Hotspot Lite, start the hotspot again when a 60-minute session ends, or use PRO for an unbroken download.
