Windows 11 Mobile Hotspot Keeps Turning Off? Here’s Why, and How to Stop It

You start the mobile hotspot in Windows 11, connect your phone, and everything is fine. Five minutes later it is off again. Or it survives until the laptop screen dims. Or it drops every time the last device disconnects and refuses to come back without a manual restart. This is one of the most reported Windows networking annoyances, and in almost every case it is not a bug: it is Windows doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Here are the causes, in the order they are worth checking, and what actually stops it happening. If none of the six fixes hold, the last section covers the limits you cannot configure away and where Connectify Hotspot behaves differently.

Why Does Windows Switch the Hotspot Off by Itself?

There are four separate mechanisms, and people usually run into more than one:

• The idle timeout. Windows turns the hotspot off when no device has been connected for a few minutes. It is a battery-saving measure and it is on by default.
• Wi-Fi adapter power management. Windows is allowed to power down the wireless adapter to save energy. When it does, the hotspot goes with it.
• Sleep, hibernate and modern standby. A laptop that sleeps stops broadcasting. Modern standby machines can enter a low-power state with the lid open, which is why the hotspot sometimes dies while you are still using the computer.
• Driver resets after an update. A Windows Update that replaces the wireless driver frequently resets hotspot settings and occasionally leaves the virtual adapter in a broken state.

6 Fixes, Starting With the Ones That Work Most Often

Work down this list. The first two solve the majority of cases.

1. Turn off the idle timeout. Open Settings → Network & internet → Mobile hotspot and switch off “Power saving: when no devices are connected, turn off mobile hotspot automatically.” This alone fixes the most common complaint.
2. Stop Windows powering down the adapter. Open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click your Wi-Fi adapter, choose Properties → Power Management, and clear “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” Do the same for any adapter with “Virtual” or “Hosted Network” in its name.
3. Stop the machine sleeping. In Settings → System → Power & battery → Screen and sleep, set sleep to Never while plugged in. Leave the screen timeout alone: that one is harmless.
4. Update or roll back the wireless driver. If the trouble started after an update, get the driver from your laptop manufacturer’s support page rather than from Windows Update. If it started immediately after a driver update, roll it back from the same Device Manager properties screen.
5. Restart the relevant services. Open services.msc and confirm Windows Mobile Hotspot Service (icssvc) and WLAN AutoConfig are running and set to start automatically.
6. Reset the network stack. As a last resort, Settings → Network & internet → Advanced network settings → Network reset. This clears saved networks and VPN configurations, so note down anything you will need to re-enter.

How to Tell Which of the Four Is Causing It

If you would rather diagnose than work through the list, the timing tells you which mechanism is at fault:

• It dies a few minutes after the last device leaves, but never while something is connected. That is the idle timeout. Fix 1.
• It dies while devices are still connected and using it. That is adapter power management or a driver problem. Fixes 2 and 4.
• It dies when you walk away from the machine, regardless of connections. That is sleep or modern standby. Fix 3.
• It stopped working entirely after a specific date. Check Windows Update history for that date. If a driver was replaced, fix 4; if a feature update landed, fix 6.
• It dies at random with no pattern at all. Open Event Viewer and look under Windows Logs → System for warnings from the WLAN or icssvc source around the time it dropped. Repeated adapter resets there point at hardware or driver trouble rather than a setting.

One more thing worth ruling out early: if you have ever enabled Internet Connection Sharing on an adapter, turn it off. ICS and the Mobile Hotspot both try to manage the same sharing and the conflict produces exactly this on-again-off-again behaviour.

The Limits You Cannot Fix

Some of what frustrates people about the Windows hotspot is not configurable at all, and it is worth knowing before you spend another hour on it:

• It stops at 8 connected devices. There is no setting to raise that.
• It will not share every connection type: some tethered phones and USB modems are simply not offered.
• It puts connected devices on a separate network from the PC, which is why a Chromecast or a console connected to it often cannot be seen by your phone.
• It cannot rebroadcast the Wi-Fi network the PC is currently connected to, so it is no use for extending a weak signal.
• It requires Windows 10 or 11. On Windows 7 or 8 the feature does not exist.

When to Stop Troubleshooting and Use Something Else

If the built-in hotspot works for you after the fixes above, keep using it: it is free and it is built in. If you are restarting it several times a day, or you keep hitting one of the limits in the previous section, that is the point where a dedicated app is the sensible answer rather than a purchase you talked yourself into.
