How to Connect Steam Deck to Hotel WiFi from Desktop Mode or Through a Laptop

How to Connect Steam Deck to Hotel WiFi That Needs a Login Page

To connect a Steam Deck to hotel WiFi, switch to Desktop Mode, join the hotel network and complete its sign-in page in a web browser. If that page won’t load on the Deck, sign in on your Windows laptop instead and share the laptop’s connection with the Steam Deck over Wi-Fi.

You’re not the only one whose Steam Deck stalls on a hotel login screen. Steam Deck owners report the same problem on the Steam Community forums. This guide covers the Desktop Mode route first, then the laptop route with Connectify Hotspot, a Windows app that shares your PC’s internet connection with your other devices over Wi-Fi. Download Connectify Hotspot free so the laptop route is ready before your trip.

Travel Wi-Fi

One hotel login, all your devices, through Connectify Hotspot

Hotel Wi-Fi usually asks for a room number and a surname on a browser page before a device can get online. Connectify Hotspot lets one Windows laptop do that sign-in and share the connection with the other devices you travelled with.

  • The sign-in page

Hotel networks hold new devices at a browser login page until someone fills in the form.

  • Devices that struggle with it

A Kindle or a smart speaker has no browser for the login page. Consoles, streaming sticks and handhelds often fail to load it, or lose the connection when the hotel login times out.

  • One gateway instead

Your Windows laptop signs in once and becomes the gateway for your other devices. They join the laptop's hotspot, so the login page only has to work on the laptop.

Hotspot Lite, the free edition, runs in 60-minute sessions, so on a long stay you start it again now and then. PRO removes the time limit. If your devices stop getting online, the hotel login has timed out: sign in again on the laptop. If the hotel charges per device, check its terms before you share the connection.

Why a Steam Deck Won’t Connect to Hotel WiFi in Game Mode

Most hotel networks use a captive portal: a web page you have to fill in before the network gives you internet access. You type a room number and surname, a code from the front desk, or just accept the terms. Until the page is done, the hotel lets your device join the Wi-Fi but blocks its internet traffic.

In Game Mode, the Steam Deck opens that page in a small login window from its Internet settings. Valve doesn’t publish hotel-specific steps, and owners on the Steam Community forums describe the window failing in several ways:

  • A black or blank page instead of the hotel’s sign-in form.
  • A page that reloads every few seconds, so you can’t finish typing.
  • The Deck freezing for a while after the page opens.

The fix most owners report is to skip the Game Mode window and sign in from Desktop Mode, where a full web browser handles the page.

Sign In to Hotel WiFi from Steam Deck Desktop Mode

Before the trip: install a web browser in Desktop Mode, such as Firefox or Google Chrome from the Discover store. Discover needs an internet connection, so install the browser at home, not at the hotel.

  1. Hold the power button and choose Switch to Desktop.
  2. Click the network icon in the taskbar and select the hotel’s Wi-Fi. Enter its password if the hotel gave you one.
  3. Open your browser. If the hotel page doesn’t appear by itself, go to a plain web address that starts with http, such as http://neverssl.com. Secure pages that start with https often can’t show the hotel’s redirect.
  4. Fill in the sign-in page. To type, press Steam + X to open the on-screen keyboard. If it doesn’t appear, Steam Deck owners report that the Steam app needs to be running in Desktop Mode; opening Steam in offline mode is enough.
  5. Use the Return to Gaming Mode shortcut on the desktop. The Deck stays on the hotel network.

If none of this works, the hotel’s page may simply not support the Deck. Ask the front desk whether it can register a device for you, or use the laptop route below.

Connect a Steam Deck to Hotel WiFi Through Your Laptop

The laptop route works because the hotel’s sign-in page only has to be completed once, on the laptop. Connectify Hotspot then shares that signed-in connection as your own Wi-Fi network, and the Steam Deck joins it in Game Mode the same way it joins your network at home. No login window, no Desktop Mode, no keyboard workarounds.

Share Hotel WiFi with Your Steam Deck in 7 Steps

  1. Connect your laptop to the hotel Wi-Fi and complete the sign-in page in its browser. Open any website to check that you’re online.
  2. Download and install Connectify Hotspot on your 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 PC.
  3. Open it and choose Wi-Fi hotspot.
  4. Under Internet to share, pick the hotel Wi-Fi connection.
  5. Set a password. Turn on Block ads if you want lighter pages on every device. Lite runs in 60-minute sessions; PRO removes the limit.
  6. Click Start hotspot.
  7. On the Steam Deck, open the Internet settings in Game Mode, select your Connectify Hotspot network and enter its password.

Connectify Hotspot 27 Ready to start screen with Wi-Fi hotspot mode, the connection to share, network name and password

Set it up at home once. Join the Steam Deck to your Connectify Hotspot before the trip. The Deck remembers the network name and password, so at each new hotel you only sign in on the laptop and start the hotspot. Keep the same hotspot name and password, or the Deck will need setting up again.

Three more tips. A large game download can outlast a 60-minute Lite session, so start the hotspot again when a session ends, or use PRO for an unbroken download. Hotel sign-ins can expire, so if the Deck suddenly drops offline, check the laptop’s browser for a new sign-in page. On laptops with Modern Standby, Windows stops the hotspot about 10 minutes after the screen turns off, so keep the laptop plugged in with its screen on.

Connectify Hotspot 27 runs on 64-bit Windows 10 (version 1703 or later) and Windows 11. On a Windows 7 or 8 PC, use Connectify Hotspot 2021 instead: see our Windows 7 and Windows 8 guides.

Turn On Free Gaming Mode for Steam Deck Online Play

Online games need other players’ devices to reach yours. A shared connection can get in the way of that, the same problem consoles report as a strict NAT type. Connectify Hotspot Lite includes gaming mode for free: open the Clients screen, select your Steam Deck and turn on its gaming mode. UPnP, the feature that lets a device open the connections it needs by itself, is on by default.

Gaming mode fixes the part of the path that runs through your laptop. The hotel’s own network can still restrict connections, and no setting on your laptop changes that. For more on this, see how to fix a strict NAT type.

Check the Hotel’s Device Terms Before You Share

Connectify Hotspot is for getting your own devices online after you sign in once. Some hotels charge per device or limit how many devices each guest can connect. If yours does, check its terms before you share the connection. When the hotel charges per room or per stay, sharing it with your own Steam Deck is fine.
